Questions
- Do I need restaurant experience to get hired?
- Not always. Many places hire hosts, bussers, dishwashers and food runners with little or no experience and train on the job. Servers, bartenders and line cooks usually need some experience, but a good attitude and a reliable schedule go a long way. Florida also requires food safety training for most food workers, and many employers help you get it, so ask about it in your interview.
- How much can I earn with tips?
- It depends on the restaurant, the shift and the season. Residents tend to be regulars who tip well, and winter is usually the busiest time of year. Posted pay is currently $14 to $15.50 an hour. Tips are separate from that, so ask the manager how tips are collected and shared before you accept an offer.
